Match the collection point to the water.
Surface drainage collects runoff where it travels across the ground or paving. A catch basin uses a point inlet, while a channel drain collects along a linear grate. A French drain collects water within a subsurface drainage zone.
These approaches can be parts of one plan, but they do not solve every problem in the same way. First establish whether the issue is surface runoff, groundwater or a combination.
Point collection and linear collection.
A point inlet can be relevant at a low collection area. A linear drain can be relevant where runoff crosses a defined edge or paved surface. The assessment should consider the surface grade, expected flow, grate and pipe connections.
Vehicle or pedestrian areas require components and installation suited to the loading and intended use. Do not assume a decorative grate is appropriate for a driveway or that a channel installed without the correct surface transitions will collect the water.
The pipe and outlet complete the system.
A surface inlet only collects water. Pipe routing, receiving capacity and discharge permission determine what happens next. An outlet restriction can make an inlet appear ineffective even when its grate is clear.
Keep surface and subsurface functions distinct when comparing options. Adding more inlet area does not automatically address groundwater beneath a lawn or moisture entering a basement.
Plan for accessible maintenance.
- Keep accessible grates and inlets clear of leaves and debris from a safe position.
- Ask how sediment can be inspected and removed.
- Identify the receiving pipe and outlet rather than assuming the inlet drains to a public system.
- Confirm load requirements for paving and traffic areas.
- Include surface restoration and grade transitions in the estimate.
Compare options rather than choosing by appearance.
Tell us where runoff travels and where it collects. Photographs or notes about a storm can help explain the issue; mention available photos in Project Details so sharing can be arranged later. Photos or drawings can be discussed after the initial request.
A surface inlet, a grading adjustment and a French drain have different jobs. The appropriate choice should follow the observed water path and the conditions of the property.
