Water collecting suddenly? Safe steps before drainage work

Know what to do when water starts collecting around your home. Prioritize safety, document the issue and arrange a suitable assessment.

Sudden water collection can be alarming, especially when it reaches a building. A French drain is a planned drainage system, not an instant substitute for emergency safety measures. Start by identifying immediate risks and protecting people before thinking about excavation.

Put safety first.

If water is near electrical equipment, a building is unsafe, sewage is involved or there is a suspected gas leak, leave the affected area and contact the appropriate emergency service or utility. Do not enter standing water when electrical hazards may be present.

Document where water comes from.

From a safe position, note where water enters, where it collects and how the situation changes during rain or snowmelt. Roof runoff, blocked outlets, low ground and building leaks need different assessments. Photos and observations can help explain the issue to a qualified professional.

Use appropriate short-term measures.

Clearing a safely accessible surface drain or redirecting a downspout may help in some situations, but do not dig beside a foundation or alter drainage toward a neighboring property without proper guidance. Temporary measures should not create a new safety or discharge problem.

Assess the long-term drainage options.

After the immediate concern is controlled, investigate the cause. Grading, roof runoff, a surface drain, an exterior French drain or an interior system may each be part of an appropriate plan. Soil conditions, slope, access and a suitable outlet influence the design.

Check an existing system.

A blocked outlet, damaged pipe or sediment can reduce the performance of an installed drain. Inspection can help distinguish cleaning and repair work from the need for a redesigned system.

Request an assessment with useful details.

Describe the location, timing and symptoms, including any existing drain or sump. Confirm availability, service scope and timing with the professional you contact. This website does not establish an around-the-clock emergency-response commitment.
